I will boo the failures, thugs and cowards

I find it a little bit sickening - not to mention hypocritical - that managers and players are calling for an end to abuse from fans in the same week that Man Utd players have been accused of having gang-sex with a 19-year-old girl at their Christmas party.

Respect has got to be earned, and I’ve got no respect for some of these overpaid thugs and cowards.

The irony is that the United players wouldn’t even have had their Christmas party this week if the players at the party - including Jonny Evans, who has been indicated in an alleged rape - hadn’t been knocked out of the Carling Cup by Championship strugglers Coventry.

My way or the Heighway

Steve Heighway on Rafa Benitez’s decision to take control of the youth policy at Liverpool:

Rafa is a terrific manager, but I think I’m the best coach of 17 and 18-year-olds in this club. But I no longer get the chance to do that. It’s crazy, mad and it’s to the detriment of the young players here. My influence is being taken away too soon over the best players and I’m not convinced that what they are going to do is better for them.

Heighway has been in charge of the youth set-up at Anfield for 18 years and recently the club won the FA Youth cup. However, the question you’d ask is ‘Who is the last player to make the step up from the academy to the first team? Who are the young players who have the potential to make it at Liverpool?’.

It seems a long time since Liverpool have produced anyone of note. Steven Gerrard is the last really good player to have come through the youth set-up, while the likes of Steven Warnock, David Thompson and that really, really ugly right back who went to Sunderland have done all right for themselves.

Time for a change or has Heighway been hard done by?
