Stadium expansion

Found via Soccer Mad in America is this report that Barcelona want to expand the capacity of Camp Nou to 115,000. At the moment it’s a shade under 97,000.

Seems a bit odd to me. Now, I know Barcelona went on this membership drive and have increased the number of members significantly, but at the same time it’s very rare to see the stadium completely sold out.

Only against Real Madrid and possibly Valencia is the arena full for league games and obviously the Champions League encounters are sell-outs depending on the opposition. For any other game there are nearly always tickets on general sale and empty seats scattered around the ground.

As well as that I’ve said the Barcelona derby (versus Espanyol) attract crowds of as ‘little’ as 45,000 in recent years.

That said if they’re going ahead with it they must see the benefit of it and for the few occassions each season when they sell out it must certainly generate enough income to cope with the increased number of empty seats the rest of the time.

It strikes me that they’re making a big play for the tourist fans here.

United crush

It was a bit scary looking at pictures of United fans being crushed during last night’s Champions League game against Lille. I thought football, at least in Europe’s top leagues and premier club competition, had moved beyond that.

UEFA are investigating. It will be interesting to hear what they say about a situation that should never have happened and I’ll be very interested to hear what they have to say about the French police who thought tear gas was a good option.

Arsenal ban national flags

Posted on December 18th, 2006 in Politics, Stadia by Left back

It seems the football world has gone PC mad. Some weeks ago a man flew a Turkish Cypriot flag at Ashburton Grove. A large number of people, Greek Cypriot Arsenal fans in particular, complained to the club.

In the light of that they have now decided to ban all national flags from the ground. This is a real shame. Part of the tradition of groups of Arsenal fans that travel from all over Europe to support their club was to bring a flag from their country. It has always been part of the atmosphere and a sign that Arsenal had fans from all over the world.

Obviously there’s a political issue if someone flies a Turkish Cypriot flag so given that Turkey aside, all foreign governments and the United Nations recognise the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus over the whole island of Cyprus, why couldn’t Arsenal simply have banned that particular flag from the ground?

It seems a massive overreaction and opens the floodgates for more PC nonsense to take over the game. There will always be something to offend somebody. Do we just need to complain now to have it taken away or can’t we cope with anything at all.

As well as that the decision to ban flags has been seriously questioned when Arsenal run advertisements for the state of Israel all over the hoardings each match day and in the programme. See here for more.
